CAITLIN CLARK AT NO. 2? LET’S HAVE A REAL CONVERSATION

Posted on June 30, 2026 by Jay

A graphic showing Stephen Curry ahead of Caitlin Clark in jersey sales since 2024 is making the rounds online.

And on the surface, that sounds right.

Curry is an NBA legend. A global icon. A four-time champion.

But if we’re being serious — if we’re actually talking about what these numbers mean — then Caitlin Clark at No. 2 might be the most misleading “No. 2” in sports right now.

Because context changes everything.

And in context?

Clark has the strongest case for No. 1.

LET’S START HERE: WHO HAD THE HARDER CLIMB?

This is where the debate begins.

Curry built his empire in the NBA — the most powerful basketball machine on earth.

Global distribution. Global marketing. Global audience.

That machine has been feeding his brand for over 15 years.

Clark walked into a league still fighting for equal visibility and immediately became its center of gravity.

That’s not the same climb.

Not even close.

One athlete is operating with the biggest engine in sports behind him.

The other became the engine herself.

That matters.

NO PLAYER ON THAT LIST CHANGED THEIR LEAGUE THIS FAST

This is where Clark separates herself.

Not Curry. Not LeBron James. Not Luka Dončić. Not Victor Wembanyama.

None of them entered the league and immediately shifted ticket demand, TV ratings, road attendance, media coverage, and merchandise sales at this speed.

Clark did.

That’s the debate.

Because if one player instantly raises the financial ceiling of an entire league, how are we measuring “No. 1”?

By volume?

Or by value?

THE INDIANA FEVER WENT FROM REBUILD TO RELEVANT OVERNIGHT

The Indiana Fever weren’t a mainstream sports story before Clark.

Now they’re the headline.

That’s not accidental.

Clark made Indiana the most watched team in the WNBA.

She made opposing arenas sell out.

She made national media care.

That kind of transformation isn’t normal.

That’s generational.

IF CAITLIN CLARK HAD THE NBA MACHINE BEHIND HER, WHAT WOULD THESE NUMBERS LOOK LIKE?

That’s the real debate nobody wants to have.

Put Clark in the NBA’s commercial ecosystem.

Give her the same scale. The same merchandising network. The same global machine.

What happens?

Because if she’s already No. 2 without that infrastructure, the argument that she’s the true No. 1 becomes hard to ignore.

And that’s the point.

This isn’t disrespect to Curry.

It’s recognizing that Clark’s numbers may actually be heavier because of the conditions she achieved them under.

FINAL WORD: THE GRAPHIC SAYS NO. 2. THE REALITY SAYS OTHERWISE

Numbers without context create incomplete stories.

And this story is bigger than jerseys.

This is about influence. Transformation. Market power. Cultural reach.

Caitlin Clark isn’t chasing relevance.

She is relevance.

So yes, the chart says No. 2.

But if we’re debating impact, difficulty, and what it took to get there?

That conversation starts with one name.

And it’s not No. 2.
