Red Bull’s Oscar Piastri Move Sparks Major Max Verstappen Exit Speculation

Posted on May 8, 2026 by MK

Fresh reports from inside the Formula 1 paddock have ignited massive speculation surrounding Max Verstappen’s future at Red Bull, with Oscar Piastri now emerging as the team’s reported top target if the four-time world champion decides to walk away from the Milton Keynes outfit.

The rumor exploded following the Miami Grand Prix weekend, where growing frustrations around the controversial 2026 regulations once again placed Verstappen at the center of the sport’s biggest talking point. The Dutch superstar has repeatedly criticized the new era of Formula 1, comparing the racing style to “Mario Kart” and openly questioning whether the current direction of the sport still aligns with what drivers truly want from Formula 1. While Verstappen remains contracted until the end of 2027, the constant speculation surrounding retirement and a potential shock departure has reportedly forced Red Bull into preparing contingency plans behind the scenes.

According to reports circulating after Miami, Red Bull leadership sees Oscar Piastri as the ideal successor if Verstappen unexpectedly exits the team. Team principal Laurent Mekies and Red Bull managing director Oliver Mintzlaff are believed to admire the Australian’s composure, racecraft, and ability to perform under pressure. Despite McLaren tying Piastri down with a long-term contract running through 2028, Red Bull reportedly believes the 25-year-old possesses the mentality required to lead a championship-caliber project in the future.

Piastri’s reputation inside the paddock has continued to rise dramatically over the last two seasons. After winning multiple Grands Prix and emerging as one of the fastest drivers on the grid, he has consistently proven capable of battling wheel-to-wheel with Verstappen himself. His recent podium finish in Miami further reinforced the belief that he belongs among Formula 1’s elite drivers. Red Bull’s interest also reflects lingering regret from the team’s past leadership after missing the opportunity to sign Piastri during his junior career rise through Formula 3 and Formula 2.

The situation also highlights Red Bull’s uncertainty regarding its long-term internal options. While Isack Hadjar remains highly rated within the academy system, reports suggest the team is not yet fully convinced he is ready to become the face of the organization should Verstappen leave unexpectedly. That reality makes Piastri an attractive target because he already possesses experience at the front of the grid, proven race-winning ability, and the calm personality required to handle the intense pressure that comes with leading Red Bull Racing.

From a wider Formula 1 perspective, this story could become one of the defining narratives of the 2026 season. If Verstappen’s frustrations with the FIA regulations continue to grow, speculation surrounding his future will only intensify. At the same time, McLaren faces a major challenge in ensuring Piastri remains fully committed long-term, especially if rival teams begin testing the waters behind closed doors. While there is currently no indication that Piastri intends to leave McLaren, Formula 1 history has repeatedly shown that championship-caliber drivers often become central figures in major transfer battles when uncertainty emerges at the top teams.

Looking ahead, much may depend on how competitive Red Bull remains over the coming months. If the team struggles to adapt to the controversial new power unit era while Mercedes and McLaren continue improving, Verstappen’s patience could face its biggest test yet. Meanwhile, Piastri’s stock continues rising with every strong performance, making him one of the most valuable assets in the sport’s future driver market.

For now, Verstappen remains a Red Bull driver and Piastri remains committed to McLaren. But inside Formula 1, speculation often becomes reality far quicker than expected — and this latest development has already sent shockwaves across the paddock.
