A quiet afternoon in downtown Indianapolis took a shocking turn when police arrested two suspects in connection with the vandalism of a vehicle belonging to Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham. The incident, which unfolded just hours before the team’s scheduled home practice, has sparked widespread anger and raised fresh concerns about the safety of professional athletes.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), officers responded to a parking garage near Gainbridge Fieldhouse at approximately 1:45 p.m. after receiving reports of individuals damaging a luxury SUV. Upon arrival, authorities found the vehicle—later confirmed as Cunningham’s—with scratched paint, a shattered rear window, and slashed tires.
Witnesses directed officers to two individuals fleeing the scene on foot. After a brief pursuit, police apprehended the suspects, who have been identified as 29-year-old Alex Martinez and 35-year-old Jordan Reyes. Both are transgender individuals, a detail that has added a layer of complexity to the case. The suspects have been charged with criminal mischief, vandalism, and resisting arrest.
“This was a deliberate, targeted act,” said IMPD spokesperson Officer Dana Whitfield. “We are treating this as a serious crime, and we will not tolerate harassment of any kind against our city’s athletes.”
Cunningham, who was not present at the time of the incident, later released a statement on social media: “I’m shaken, but I’m safe. Thank you to the Indianapolis police for their quick response. I’ll be ready to play tonight.”
The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Investigators are reviewing security footage and interviewing the suspects, who are being held at the Marion County Jail. A GoFundMe page has already been launched to cover the repair costs, raising over $5,000 in under an hour.
The Fever organization condemned the act, stating, “We stand with Sophie and are cooperating fully with law enforcement. Acts of violence have no place in our community.”
This incident comes amid heightened national discourse on athlete safety and LGBTQ+ issues, making it a flashpoint for debate. The team has increased security around players, and the investigation is ongoing.
