Oscar Piastri Faces Growing Pressure at McLaren as Lando Norris Continues Setting the Pace

Posted on May 19, 2026 by MK

Oscar Piastri may be one of Formula 1’s most talented young drivers, but the battle inside McLaren is becoming increasingly intense as the 2026 season develops. Former Formula 1 driver Johnny Herbert recently suggested that frustration will naturally continue building for the Australian whenever teammate Lando Norris remains ahead. While rumors continue to circulate regarding possible future opportunities elsewhere, Piastri’s biggest challenge at the moment appears to be directly inside his own garage.

The comments come at an interesting moment in the championship race. Norris entered the season carrying the confidence of a reigning world champion after successfully defeating both Piastri and Max Verstappen during the 2025 title battle. That confidence appears to have carried into the current campaign, with Norris holding an eight-point advantage over his McLaren teammate after four races. The early numbers may not seem significant, but in Formula 1, small gaps can quickly become difficult mountains to climb.

Johnny Herbert believes Piastri possesses the mentality required to respond positively. He highlighted that frustration is almost unavoidable when a driver sees a teammate extracting slightly more performance from identical machinery. However, Herbert also emphasized that Piastri has shown resilience throughout his career and understands what went wrong during previous difficult moments. Learning from setbacks has always been one of the Australian’s strongest qualities.

What continues to make Norris dangerous is not simply raw pace, but consistency. Herbert noted that Norris has developed an impressive ability to maximize performance while avoiding costly mistakes. Championship-winning drivers often reach another level after their first title because they begin understanding exactly when to push and when to preserve results. That experience could be a major advantage as the season progresses.

For Piastri, the challenge is finding those final details that separate elite drivers from championship leaders. The encouraging sign for McLaren is that the performance difference does not appear enormous. Herbert pointed out that Piastri is not far away from Norris in terms of outright speed. In Formula 1 terms, “not far away” often translates to tiny margins measured in hundredths of a second.

Another factor adding pressure is the wider championship picture. Mercedes teenager Kimi Antonelli has emerged as a serious threat after winning three consecutive races and building a twenty-point lead over teammate George Russell. That development means McLaren cannot afford to become overly focused on internal competition while another team quietly builds momentum in the title race.

The upcoming Canadian Grand Prix may prove important for Piastri. Last season’s race brought frustration after contact with Norris altered the outcome of the weekend. Returning to the same circuit presents an opportunity to reset the narrative and gain valuable momentum. Strong performances at key moments often reshape entire championship campaigns.

Looking ahead, this McLaren battle feels far from settled. Piastri has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to learn quickly and respond under pressure, while Norris continues operating with the confidence of a reigning champion. The most likely scenario is that the gap between both drivers becomes even tighter as the season unfolds. If that happens, McLaren could soon find itself managing one of Formula 1’s fiercest teammate rivalries while simultaneously fighting for world championships.
