Media Calls Out Juan Pablo Montoya Over ‘Biased’ Criticism of Max Verstappen Amid FIA Controversy

Posted on May 8, 2026 by MK

Juan Pablo Montoya is facing growing backlash from sections of the motorsport media and Formula 1 community after his recent comments targeting Max Verstappen sparked accusations of hypocrisy and bias. The former Williams and McLaren driver caused controversy after suggesting the FIA should consider suspending Verstappen over his repeated criticism of Formula 1’s controversial 2026 regulations.

Montoya’s remarks immediately divided opinion across the paddock and among fans online. The Colombian argued that Verstappen’s constant complaints about the current state of Formula 1 were disrespectful to the sport and could damage its image globally. He even suggested that harsher penalties or license points could force the reigning world champion to change his tone. However, many critics were quick to point out the irony behind Montoya’s stance, considering his own explosive reputation during his Formula 1 career.

During the early 2000s, Montoya himself was widely known for openly criticizing race stewards, regulations, rival drivers, and even Formula 1 management. His fiery personality made him one of the sport’s most entertaining figures, but it also brought frequent clashes with officials and team bosses. Because of that history, many analysts believe his recent comments toward Verstappen appear inconsistent and overly harsh, especially at a time when several drivers — not just Verstappen — have openly voiced frustrations with the new regulations.

The controversy surrounding the 2026 Formula 1 rules has become one of the biggest talking points of the season. Drivers including Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, and Lando Norris have all questioned aspects of the new power unit and energy deployment systems. Many believe the regulations have created awkward racing conditions, excessive battery management, and inconsistent wheel-to-wheel action. Verstappen’s famous comparison of the current cars to “Mario Kart” quickly went viral and intensified debates about whether Formula 1 has moved too far away from traditional racing principles.

Media outlets and pundits defending Verstappen argue that criticism from drivers should not automatically be viewed as disrespect. Instead, many see it as an important part of improving the sport. Several commentators noted that Formula 1 has historically evolved through driver feedback, with past legends frequently criticizing cars, safety standards, and technical rules before major improvements were introduced. From this perspective, Verstappen’s outspoken nature reflects frustration shared by much of the grid rather than a personal attack on Formula 1 itself.

At the same time, others believe Montoya’s comments stem from concern about Formula 1’s public image during a sensitive transition period. The FIA has invested heavily in promoting the new hybrid era as a sustainable future for the sport, and constant criticism from high-profile stars risks undermining confidence among fans, sponsors, and manufacturers. Verstappen’s comments carry enormous influence globally, meaning every public criticism instantly becomes a major headline capable of shaping public perception.

The situation also highlights the growing tension between Formula 1’s governing bodies and its biggest stars. Drivers are increasingly vocal about technical regulations, race direction decisions, and the balance between entertainment and engineering. The FIA’s recent discussions around future power unit tweaks for 2027 and 2028 suggest officials are already acknowledging that adjustments are necessary, indirectly validating many of the concerns raised by Verstappen and others throughout the season.

For Verstappen, the criticism is unlikely to change his approach. The Dutchman has built his reputation on blunt honesty both on and off the track, often refusing to soften his opinions for political reasons. While some fans view this as refreshing authenticity, others see it as damaging negativity during a crucial era for Formula 1. Regardless of opinion, Verstappen remains one of the sport’s most influential figures, and his frustrations continue to dominate headlines across the paddock.

As Formula 1 heads deeper into the 2026 season, this debate could become even more intense if the racing product fails to improve consistently. If future regulation tweaks successfully solve the deployment and racing concerns, Verstappen’s criticisms may eventually be remembered as justified warnings. But if tensions between drivers, the FIA, and former legends like Montoya continue escalating, Formula 1 could face one of its most politically charged seasons in recent memory.
