Larry Bird Blasts Stephanie White’s Tactics After Fever’s Preseason Loss to Dallas Wings ..

Posted on May 1, 2026 by Joe Sam

NBA Hall of Famer Larry Bird sharply criticized Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White’s offensive and defensive schemes following a sloppy 88-79 preseason defeat to the Dallas Wings on Friday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Bird, serving as a special advisor to the Fever, did not mince words when addressing reporters after the game, expressing clear frustration with the team’s execution and tactical approach.

“We have too much talent to be playing like this,” Bird said. “The way we’re spacing the floor, the slow rotations on defense, and the predictable sets in the half-court — it’s not good enough. You can’t win in this league if you’re constantly reacting instead of dictating.”

The Fever were outrebounded 47-38 and struggled to contain Dallas’ interior attack, allowing Wings forward Arike Ogunbowale and center Teaira McCowan to dominate key stretches. Indiana shot just 41% from the field and committed 18 turnovers, many of which stemmed from poor ball movement in White’s offensive system.

Caitlin Clark led the Fever with 22 points and 7 assists but looked visibly frustrated during long scoring droughts. Aliyah Boston added 14 points and 11 rebounds, yet the team lacked the defensive intensity Bird believes is necessary for playoff contention.

When informed of Bird’s comments, Coach White responded calmly but firmly.

“Larry cares deeply about this franchise and wants us to be great,” White said. “We’ll watch the film, address the issues, and make the necessary adjustments. Preseason is about learning and improving.”

Insiders say Bird has been increasingly vocal in recent weeks about implementing more Celtics-style motion offense and aggressive help defense. The three-time NBA champion reportedly believes the current schemes are limiting the team’s star players, particularly Clark’s ability to create off the dribble.

Fever fans reacted strongly on social media, with many praising Bird’s honesty while others feared it could create tension between the legendary icon and the coaching staff heading into the regular season.

The Indiana Fever will have one more preseason game before opening the 2026 WNBA regular season next week.
