The University of Iowa community is in mourning following the sudden passing of legendary women’s basketball coach Lisa Bluder. She was 65.
The university confirmed Monday afternoon that Bluder died peacefully at her home in Iowa City following a brief battle with a undisclosed illness. Her family was by her side.
Bluder leaves behind an unmatched legacy. The winningest coach in program history, she led the Hawkeyes for 24 seasons, amassing over 500 victories. She took Iowa to 19 NCAA Tournaments, including two consecutive national championship game appearances in 2023 and 2024.
More than the wins, Bluder was the architect of a program that became the heart of the state. She was the steady hand that guided superstars like Caitlin Clark, Megan Gustafson, and Kathleen Doyle, all of whom blossomed under her player-first philosophy.
“Coach Bluder wasn’t just a coach; she was a mentor, a mother figure, and the soul of Iowa women’s basketball,” said Clark in a statement. “She taught me how to be a leader and made me believe in magic. My heart is broken.”
Bluder arrived in Iowa City in 2000 after successful stints at St. Ambrose and Drake. She quickly transformed the Hawkeyes into a perennial power, known for her high-octane offense and her unwavering belief in her players. Her 2023 team, led by Clark, shattered television ratings and captivated a nation, filling arenas across the country.
Known for her candor, loyalty, and signature smile, Bluder was recently inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. She retired unexpectedly last spring, citing a desire to spend more time with family. Her final public appearance was at a charity event just two weeks ago.
“She built this program on family, grit, and grace,” current head coach Jan Jensen, a longtime assistant, said through tears. “I loved her like a sister. The world lost a giant today.”
Flags across the University of Iowa campus are flying at half-staff. A public memorial service is being planned for Carver-Hawkeye Arena, the very court she turned into a fortress.
Lisa Bluder is survived by her husband, David, their three children, and four grandchildren. She was 65 years young, and her legend will live forever.
