Indiana Fever rookie guard Raven Johnson has been suspended indefinitely by the team following a heated physical altercation with veteran teammate Sophie Cunningham during Tuesday’s training camp practice at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
The incident unfolded late in a competitive full-court scrimmage when Johnson, the 10th overall pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft out of South Carolina, drove baseline and was met with physical defense from Cunningham. According to sources familiar with the session, Johnson took exception to the veteran’s tough play, leading to a verbal exchange that quickly escalated.
Eyewitnesses described Johnson shoving Cunningham after a hard foul, prompting the 29-year-old guard to push back forcefully. Several players, including Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston, stepped in to separate the duo as tensions boiled over on the court. No punches were thrown, but the confrontation was intense enough for practice to be paused briefly while coaches restored order.
Head coach Stephanie White addressed the team immediately afterward, emphasizing accountability and team culture. In a short statement released by the Fever, the organization confirmed Johnson’s suspension for at least the next three preseason games and mandatory participation in team-building and conflict resolution sessions.
“Competition is expected in training camp, but we will not tolerate actions that disrupt team chemistry,” White said. “Raven is a talented young player with a bright future, but she must learn to channel her competitiveness appropriately.”
Johnson, a 5-9 guard known for her playmaking and defensive instincts, was expected to battle for minutes in Indiana’s crowded backcourt alongside Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, and Cunningham, who re-signed with the Fever earlier this offseason. The rookie averaged nearly 10 points and 5 assists in her final college season while helping South Carolina reach multiple Final Fours.
Cunningham, a fiery competitor in her second year with Indiana, reportedly downplayed the clash, telling teammates it was “just basketball” and that she held no hard feelings.
The suspension comes at a critical time as the Fever look to build cohesion ahead of the 2026 regular season. Team officials hope the matter can be resolved quickly to avoid lingering distractions.
Johnson is expected to return to practice once she completes her required programs, but her status for the team’s preseason opener remains uncertain.
