Despite the Indiana Fever securing a dominant 109-91 preseason victory over the New York Liberty on Saturday, a vocal segment of the Fever fanbase unleashed harsh criticism toward superstar Caitlin Clark for what they called an underwhelming and “disappointing” performance.
Clark, playing in her first WNBA action since last July after recovering from injury, finished with 14 points on 5-of-16 shooting, including a rough 2-of-9 from three-point range. She added 7 assists and 5 rebounds but also committed 4 turnovers in 28 limited minutes as the Fever eased her workload.
While the team rolled to a 18-point win behind strong contributions from Aliyah Boston (21 points, 14 rebounds) and Kelsey Mitchell (25 points), many fans online refused to celebrate, focusing instead on Clark’s inefficient night and perceived lack of explosiveness.
“Come on, Caitlin. A preseason win is great, but that was not the Clark we know,” one frustrated fan tweeted under the trending hashtag #ClarkWakeUp. “5-16 shooting and bricks from deep? She looked rusty and hesitant. We didn’t fly her back from Iowa for this.”
Another supporter posted on a Fever forum: “Victory or not, Clark’s poor performance tonight is concerning. Too many forced shots and sloppy turnovers against a Liberty team missing some key pieces. Preseason excuse only goes so far – she’s supposed to be carrying this squad.”
Clark started slowly, missing her first three attempts and struggling to create easy looks against New York’s physical perimeter defense. Though she sparked a few highlight-reel transition plays, her trademark long-range bombing was absent, leading to visible groans from the traveling Fever faithful in attendance at Barclays Center.
Head coach Stephanie White remained positive afterward, stating, “This is exactly why we play preseason games. Caitlin is working her way back and prioritizing health. She made great reads and we got the W. I’m not worried at all.”
Clark, ever composed, told reporters: “It wasn’t my sharpest night shooting-wise, but we got the win as a team and that’s what matters. I’ll keep building and be ready when it counts.”
Still, the online backlash highlighted the sky-high expectations placed on the former Rookie of the Year. As the Fever prepare for more preseason tune-ups, fans are demanding the explosive, record-breaking Clark return immediately.
