Fernando Alonso explains why less practice benefits Aston Martin and outlines their upgrade timeline

Posted on May 6, 2026 by Kat Jay

In the ever-evolving world of Formula 1, marginal gains often separate success from stagnation. For Fernando Alonso, a veteran with decades of experience, the modern direction of the sport has introduced a fascinating paradox: sometimes, less track time can actually lead to better performance. Speaking candidly about Aston Martin F1 Team’s current approach, Alonso explained why reduced practice sessions may benefit both drivers and engineers.

Alonso emphasized that the limitation of practice sessions forces teams to be more precise and efficient. In previous eras, teams could rely on extended running time to troubleshoot issues and fine-tune setups. Now, with restricted sessions, preparation before race weekends has become significantly more important. According to Alonso, this shift plays into the hands of experienced teams that can simulate conditions more accurately and arrive better prepared.

From a driver’s perspective, fewer practice laps mean less physical and mental fatigue across a race weekend. Alonso pointed out that modern Formula 1 calendars are more demanding than ever, with back-to-back races and extensive travel. By reducing track time, drivers can conserve energy and focus more sharply when it matters most—qualifying and race day. This approach, he believes, enhances overall performance rather than diminishing it.

Another key factor Alonso highlighted is the role of simulation technology. Teams like Aston Martin now rely heavily on advanced simulators and data modeling to replicate real-world conditions. These tools allow engineers to test multiple setups virtually, reducing the need for trial-and-error on the actual track. Alonso noted that this technological evolution has made traditional long practice sessions less critical.

However, Alonso acknowledged that this system is not without its challenges. Limited practice increases the pressure to get everything right from the outset. A poor setup choice or unexpected weather condition can leave teams struggling to recover due to the lack of additional track time. For Aston Martin, consistency in preparation has become essential to avoid costly mistakes.

Looking ahead, Alonso also outlined Aston Martin’s upgrade timeline, offering insight into the team’s development strategy. Rather than introducing frequent small updates, the team is focusing on delivering more substantial upgrade packages at key points in the season. This approach allows for better integration of new components and ensures that each upgrade delivers a meaningful performance boost.

He explained that the team’s development plan is carefully aligned with specific races where upgrades can have the greatest impact. Circuits with particular characteristics—such as high-speed corners or long straights—are being targeted to maximize the effectiveness of new aerodynamic and mechanical improvements. This strategic deployment reflects a more calculated and data-driven approach.

Alonso also praised the growing cohesion within Aston Martin, noting that the team has matured significantly in its development processes. Communication between drivers, engineers, and factory staff has improved, enabling quicker decision-making and more efficient problem-solving. This internal harmony, he believes, is just as important as any technical upgrade.

Ultimately, Alonso’s perspective reflects a broader transformation within Formula 1. The sport is no longer just about raw speed on track; it is about efficiency, preparation, and intelligent resource management. By embracing reduced practice time and focusing on strategic upgrades, Aston Martin aims to remain competitive in an increasingly complex championship landscape.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on how Alonso and Aston Martin execute this philosophy. If their balance between preparation, simulation, and targeted development pays off, it could serve as a blueprint for other teams navigating the modern era of Formula 1.
