The highly anticipated WNBA matchup between the New York Liberty and the Dallas Wings, scheduled for Sunday afternoon at Barclays Center, has been officially postponed following a terrifying knife attack incident that unfolded in the arena’s main concourse during
According to law enforcement officials, the incident occurred at approximately 10:30 a.m. ET, as early-arriving team staff were filtering into the venue. Witnesses reported a sudden commotion near the main entrance, where a male suspect allegedly brandished a hunting knife and lunged at security personnel.
“It was chaos. People started screaming and running in every direction. We saw a security guard on the ground, and then we just ran for the exits,” said Marta Chen, a Liberty season ticket holder who was present.
NYPD officers stationed at the arena reacted swiftly, subduing the suspect within minutes. The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Michael Torres, was taken into custody without further incident. Two security guards and one innocent bystander sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Barclays Center officials released a statement confirming that no players or coaching staff were harmed. The arena was immediately evacuated and closed for the day as part of an ongoing investigation.
“The safety of our players, fans, and staff is our highest priority,” the statement read. “After consulting with the WNBA and both teams, the decision was made to postpone the game. A new date will be announced soon.”
New York Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello expressed relief that the situation was contained. “Our hearts go out to everyone affected. Basketball can wait. We’re just thankful everyone is safe.”
The WNBA has not yet rescheduled the game, but sources indicate a mutual date later in the season is being finalized. The suspect is currently awaiting arraignment on multiple charges, including attempted assault and possession of a weapon. The investigation remains ongoing.
