De Zerbi targets £50m Serie A centre-back even as Tottenham push for Van Hecke

Posted on June 10, 2026 by Kat Jay

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi is rapidly gathering pace, and the club’s defensive overhaul appears far from complete. Despite already pushing hard to sign Brighton’s highly rated Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke, Spurs have now turned their attention toward Serie A in search of another elite centre-back. The latest developments suggest that De Zerbi is determined to reshape his backline with multiple high-level additions rather than relying on a single marquee signing.

Reports indicate that Tottenham have opened discussions for Juventus defender Gleison Bremer, a player valued at around £50 million due to a release clause in his contract. The Brazilian centre-back, widely regarded as one of Serie A’s most consistent defensive performers in recent years, has emerged as a priority target for De Zerbi as he looks to bring both experience and physical dominance into his squad.

This move comes at a time when Spurs are still actively pursuing Van Hecke, with negotiations ongoing after multiple bids were rejected by Brighton. The Dutch international remains a key figure in De Zerbi’s plans, largely due to their successful working relationship during their time together on the south coast. His familiarity with the manager’s tactical system makes him an attractive option as Tottenham attempt to implement a more possession-based and progressive style of play.

However, De Zerbi’s interest in Bremer signals that Tottenham are not willing to put all their eggs in one basket. Instead, the Italian tactician appears keen to secure at least two high-quality centre-backs to ensure depth, competition, and tactical flexibility. This approach reflects lessons learned from last season, when defensive inconsistencies nearly dragged the club into relegation trouble.

Bremer’s profile fits perfectly with what De Zerbi demands from his defenders. Strong in duels, composed under pressure, and capable of progressing the ball from the back, the Juventus star has built a reputation as a modern centre-back who can thrive in systems that prioritize build-up play. His performances in Italy, including multiple appearances in Serie A’s Team of the Season, have attracted interest from several top European clubs.

The potential deal is also influenced by uncertainty surrounding Tottenham’s current defensive options. Cristian Romero is widely expected to leave the club amid interest from abroad, while questions remain over the long-term roles of other defenders in the squad. This uncertainty has accelerated the club’s efforts to bring in reinforcements, with De Zerbi pushing the board to act decisively in the transfer market.

Interestingly, Tottenham could explore creative solutions to complete the Bremer deal, including potential player exchanges to reduce the financial burden. While Juventus are reportedly firm on receiving close to the full release clause, Spurs’ willingness to negotiate alternative structures highlights their determination to land the Brazilian defender.

At the same time, Tottenham’s pursuit of Van Hecke continues to intensify. Talks remain ongoing, and there is growing optimism that a compromise could be reached, especially given the player’s contract situation and openness to a move. If completed, the signing would represent a significant coup, bringing in a defender already well-versed in De Zerbi’s tactical philosophy.

The broader picture reveals a club undergoing a significant transformation. De Zerbi, known for his structured yet attacking style of football, is clearly prioritizing defenders who are comfortable on the ball and capable of initiating attacks from deep positions. His vision requires centre-backs who can do more than just defend—they must also contribute to the team’s overall build-up play.

Ultimately, Tottenham’s dual pursuit of Bremer and Van Hecke underlines the scale of the rebuild currently underway in North London. Rather than settling for incremental improvements, De Zerbi is aiming for a complete defensive reset. If Spurs succeed in securing both targets, it would mark a major statement of intent and could lay the foundation for a far more competitive campaign in the seasons ahead.
