City reached a verbal agreement to sell Spanish midfielder”

Posted on August 24, 2026 by Ibrahim Musa

City reached a verbal agreement to sell Spanish midfielder Nico González to Newcastle United in a deal worth up to £50 million. The package consists of an initial £47 million fee alongside £3 million in potential add-ons. Talks accelerated rapidly after positive negotiations over the weekend, and the 24-year-old player has given his approval to complete the move to St James’ Park before the summer transfer deadline.

The agreement marks a significant turning point for González, who joined Manchester City from Porto in January 2025 for £50 million. Despite making nearly 60 appearances and displaying high technical versatility, the former Barcelona academy graduate struggled to lock down an undisputed starting place in central midfield. With Newcastle actively rebuilding their squad following key outgoings, González identified an ideal opportunity to step into a primary role.

This departure comes as part of a sweeping midfield reshuffle at the Etihad Stadium. City have already seen high-profile exits this window, including Rodri’s departure to Barcelona and Tijjani Reijnders moving to Al-Qadsiah. In response, club hierarchy has moved swiftly to secure fresh talent, recently finalizing an £85.6 million deal for 18-year-old Lille sensation Ayyoub Bouaddi while maintaining active interest in Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández.

González is now expected to travel for his medical examination and finalize personal terms in the coming days. The transaction allows Manchester City to recoup their initial investment while freeing up additional roster space and budget flexibility. With formal documentation underway, both clubs remain confident the transfer will be officially completed well ahead of the September 1 deadline.
