In a move aimed at stabilizing the Chicago Sky have signed veteran guard Chelsea Gray to a contract for the remainder of the 2026 WNBA season, the team announced Tuesday. The signing comes just hours after forward Rickea Jackson suffered a season-ending knee injury during Monday night’s loss to the New York Liberty.
Jackson, the Sky’s promising second-year wing who had emerged as a key scorer and defender averaging 14.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, went down awkwardly while contesting a drive in the third quarter. Initial MRI results confirmed a torn ACL, sidelining the 23-year-old for the rest of the campaign and leaving a significant void in Chicago’s rotation.
“Rickea has been such an important part of what we’re building here,” Sky head coach Tyler Murray said. “This is a tough blow for her and our team, but we have to find ways to move forward. Bringing in a player of Chelsea’s caliber helps us do that.”
Gray, 33, a two-time WNBA champion and former Finals MVP, joins the Sky after spending the early part of the season in free agency following her tenure with the Las Vegas Aces. Known for her elite basketball IQ, pinpoint passing, and clutch scoring, Gray brings instant experience and leadership to a Sky backcourt that has struggled with consistency.
In her career, Gray has averaged 12.4 points, 5.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds while shooting 38% from three-point range. Her ability to orchestrate an offense and make plays in big moments makes her a perfect fit alongside veteran point guard Dana Evans and rising star Angel Reese.
“I’m excited to join a team that’s competing and has big goals,” Gray said in a statement. “Chicago has great fans and a roster full of talent. I’m here to help in any way I can — whether it’s on the floor, mentoring the younger players, or making winning plays down the stretch.”
The Sky currently sit on the playoff bubble in the Eastern Conference. General Manager Jeff Pagliocca called the signing a “strategic addition” that addresses both immediate needs and long-term flexibility.
With Gray expected to make her debut this weekend, Chicago hopes her championship pedigree can help steady the ship. Jackson is expected to undergo surgery next week and begin what will be a lengthy rehabilitation process.
For a Sky team searching for momentum, the arrival of Chelsea Gray offers both hope and proven experience at a critical juncture.
