Chelsea told to re-sign Champions League star they should never have let go

Posted on April 25, 2026 by Kat Jay

Chelsea have been encouraged to pursue a move for Antonio Rüdiger from Real Madrid, with the defender described as the “ideal” solution to their defensive struggles, according to Metro Sport.

The club’s recent inconsistency has created uncertainty at Stamford Bridge. After a strong start under Liam Rosenior, results quickly worsened, leading to his departure. Heavy defeats such as an 8-2 aggregate loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League exposed major defensive issues, while a five-game goalless run revealed further problems across the squad.

Much of the criticism has centred on the defence. Goalkeepers have been prone to errors, and although the centre-back options are talented, they lack leadership and experience. Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has frequently pointed out the need for a dominant figure in that position.

Previously, Thiago Silva filled that leadership role, providing organisation and guidance to younger players. Since his exit in 2024, Chelsea have struggled to replace his presence.

Rüdiger, who departed Chelsea in 2022 for Real Madrid, has been identified as a strong candidate to restore that authority at the back. Former Premier League midfielder Charlie Adam believes Chelsea made a serious error letting him leave.

“They never should have let him go,” Adam said. “He’s an incredible player and exactly what Chelsea are missing. Thiago Silva brought leadership and composure, and Rüdiger can do the same.”

The German defender has been a key figure for Real Madrid, playing more than 170 matches and winning major trophies, including the Champions League.

His experience at elite level and previous connection with Chelsea make a potential return attractive, but it would go against the club’s current transfer model focused on younger, resaleable talent.

At 33, Rüdiger does not align with that strategy, and reports suggest he is nearing a contract extension in Spain.
