Alyssa Thomas Ejected for arguing with officials in a Chaotic Preseason Showdown as Mercury defeat Japan…

Posted on April 30, 2026 by Joe Sam

The Phoenix Mercury’s preseason exhibition against the Japanese national team took a dramatic turn Wednesday night when veteran forward Alyssa Thomas was ejected in the fourth quarter for arguing with officials.

Playing in her first game with the Mercury during their international tune-up in Tokyo’s Ariake Arena, Thomas became incensed after a controversial no-call on a drive to the basket with 3:12 remaining and Phoenix leading 78-65. The fiery 6-foot-2 forward immediately confronted the lead referee, gesturing wildly and voicing her displeasure over what she perceived as missed fouls throughout the contest.

Despite an initial warning, Thomas continued her protest, resulting in two rapid technical fouls and an automatic ejection—the first of her WNBA preseason career. As she stormed off the court toward the locker room, the crowd reacted with a mix of boos and stunned silence.

Mercury head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown expressed disappointment in the post-game press conference.

“Alyssa brings incredible intensity and leadership, but we have to maintain composure regardless of the situation,” Izzo-Brown said. “This is a learning moment for all of us as we prepare for the upcoming season.”

Before her ejection, Thomas recorded 16 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists, showcasing the all-around game that made her a standout with the Connecticut Sun. The Mercury ultimately secured a hard-fought 91-79 victory over a competitive Japanese squad featuring several rising stars and WNBA veterans.

Sources close to the team suggested Thomas was particularly frustrated by several calls that appeared to favor the home team in the physical matchup. The exhibition marked part of Phoenix’s preparations as they integrate new pieces into their roster ahead of the 2026 WNBA season.

Social media erupted following the incident, with fans divided between defending Thomas’s passion and criticizing her lack of control in what was intended as a low-stakes preseason game.

The Mercury will face Japan again in a rematch this weekend before returning stateside. Team officials have yet to announce any internal discipline for Thomas.

This ejection adds an unexpected layer of drama to an otherwise promising start for Phoenix in their international slate.
