Chaos Erupts: Sonia Citron Ejected After Spitting on Marina Mabrey during Mystics vs Tempo Showdown .  ..

Posted on June 13, 2026 by Joe Sam

In a heated WNBA matchup that quickly descended into ugliness, Washington Mystics rookie guard Sonia Citron was ejected late in the third quarter after officials ruled she intentionally spat on Indiana Tempo veteran Marina Mabrey during a physical altercation under the basket. The incident, which occurred with 4:12 remaining in the period, has already sparked widespread debate across the league about player conduct and on-court discipline.

The Mystics and Tempo were locked in a tightly contested game at Capital One Arena, with the visiting Tempo holding a slim 68-65 lead. Tensions had been building throughout a chippy contest filled with hard fouls and trash talk. According to multiple eyewitness accounts and broadcast replays, Citron and Mabrey became entangled while battling for a rebound. Words were exchanged, and in a shocking escalation, Citron allegedly spat directly at Mabrey’s face before shoving her away.

Referees immediately reviewed the play via instant replay and issued Citron a flagrant-2 foul and an ejection. Mabrey, visibly shaken and wiping her face, received a technical foul for her response but remained in the game. “I’ve been in this league a long time and I’ve never seen anything like that,” Mabrey told reporters postgame. “It’s disrespectful. We’re out here competing, not trying to catch diseases from each other.”

Citron, the highly touted rookie known for her competitive fire, showed no immediate remorse as she left the court to a chorus of boos. In a brief statement released by the Mystics, she said: “I was caught up in the moment. I apologize to Marina and the fans. That’s not who I am.” Head coach Eric Thibault expressed disappointment but defended his player’s overall intensity. “Sonia is passionate. Tonight it crossed the line, and she’ll face the consequences,” he said.

The ejection proved costly for the Mystics, who struggled without their young spark plug and ultimately fell 92-81. Mabrey finished with 21 points and 7 assists, helping stabilize the Tempo in the decisive fourth quarter.

League officials have already launched a formal review, with sources indicating Citron could face a multi-game suspension and significant fine. The WNBA Players Association has not yet commented, but several veterans voiced concerns on social media about maintaining the league’s growing reputation for professionalism amid rising physicality.

This marks the second high-profile on-court incident involving a rookie this season, raising questions about the mental and emotional demands placed on young players transitioning to the professional level. Fans and analysts remain divided: some view Citron’s actions as an unacceptable breach of sportsmanship, while others argue the league’s physical brand of basketball sometimes pushes emotions to the brink.

As the Mystics prepare for their next game without Citron, the focus shifts to how this controversy will impact team chemistry and the broader conversation around accountability in women’s basketball. One thing is certain—the Mystics-Tempo rivalry just gained a new, bitter chapter.
