Breanna Stewart Issues Apology to Sophie Cunningham After Preseason game collision incident…..

Posted on April 27, 2026 by Joe Sam

New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart publicly apologized to Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham following a hard mid-air collision during Saturday’s WNBA preseason opener at Barclays Center.

The incident unfolded in the second quarter of the Fever’s road matchup against the Liberty. With Indiana trailing 38-42, Stewart attacked the baseline for a contested layup. Cunningham, who had transferred to the Fever and was making her preseason debut after recovering from a prior knee injury, rotated aggressively for the block. The two stars collided in mid-air, with Stewart’s arm catching Cunningham across the face and upper body. Cunningham crashed to the floor, clutching her jaw and neck area, while Stewart landed off-balance.

Medical staff rushed to check on Cunningham, who stayed down briefly before rising. She remained in the game after evaluation but showed clear frustration. Stewart immediately approached her during the next stoppage to express concern on the court.

The Liberty went on to win 109-91, but the physical play drew attention postgame. Stewart, a veteran known for her class, took to social media hours later with a direct message:

“Sophie, I’m really sorry about that collision tonight,” Stewart wrote on X. “It was a high-speed play and I never meant to make that kind of contact. You’re an incredible competitor, and I have nothing but respect for you and the energy you bring to the Fever. Hope you’re feeling good and back to full strength soon. Let’s keep pushing this league forward.”

Cunningham responded positively: “No hard feelings, Bre. Basketball gets physical—appreciate you reaching out. Excited for the season ahead with my new Fever teammates.”

Fever head coach Christie Sides noted the team was monitoring Cunningham closely but expected no long-term issues. “Sophie’s tough. She bounced back quick, and we’re glad it wasn’t serious,” Sides said.

Caitlin Clark, who also returned from injury and led the Fever with strong play, praised the sportsmanship: “That’s what makes our league special—respect even in the heat of battle.”

Stewart finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Cunningham contributed 14 points and 3 assists before limited minutes due to soreness. The Fever host the Dallas Wings in their next preseason game on April 30 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The exchange highlighted growing physicality in the WNBA while showcasing professionalism between two of the league’s top talents
