Type O Negative Cancels Tribute Plans and Album Amid Internal Misunderstanding
In a surprising and disappointing turn for fans worldwide, the surviving members of Type O Negative have officially canceled all previously announced tribute shows, album plans, and the global “Resurrection Tour”, citing internal misunderstandings and a breakdown in communication regarding the band’s legacy and future.
The cancellation comes just weeks after news of a long-awaited return had ignited a wave of excitement across the metal and goth music communities. Guitarist Kenny Hickey and drummer Johnny Kelly had initially announced plans to honor the late Peter Steele with a series of tribute performances and a new album featuring unreleased material. However, in a joint statement released today, the band members revealed that key details surrounding the project were misunderstood, leading to creative and legal complications that halted progress.
“We want to sincerely apologize to our fans,” said Hickey. “There was a genuine effort to do something meaningful in Peter’s honor, but unfortunately, the vision wasn’t aligned across all parties involved. Rather than risk compromising what Type O Negative stood for, we’ve chosen to step back.”
The confusion reportedly stemmed from conflicting views on how to represent Steele’s legacy, the use of unreleased material, and potential guest vocalists. Keyboardist Josh Silver, who had remained mostly silent since Steele’s passing, was allegedly not on board with the direction of the tribute efforts, further complicating matters.
The planned reissue of Dead Again will remain available, but no additional material or touring will follow.
Fans have responded with a mix of heartbreak and understanding, many expressing respect for the band’s integrity. While the resurrection has been laid to rest—for now—Type O Negative’s legacy remains immortal, preserved in its original form, untainted by
compromise.
