The lack of a concrete agreement on personal terms will remain a potential concern until it is confirmed that a deal is in place but it appears one major hurdle has been cleared with the medical.

There has been little risk of Cantwell picking up an injury since he has not trained with the first team or played a game for the B Team.

That situation has not pleased fans and Ibrox News pundit Derek Ferguson is clear they would not accept the ex-Norwich man back.

So a transfer departure inside the deadline looks the only viable option, and with Blackburn seemingly the only club interested in signing there is a lot riding on this for Rangers and Philippe Clement.

The Belgian is in pursuit of Nedim Bajrami on loan from Sassuolo as an incoming priority on Deadline Day [Daily Record, 29 August], who looks set to provide another attacking midfield option to the first team which Cantwell ceased to be when he asked to leave the club.

So the sooner an announcement confirming Cantwell has a new home the better for all involved to end an increasingly messy situation at Ibrox.
