TEHRAN — The body of senior Iranian official Ali Shamkhani, a top adviser to the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has reportedly been buried without a head following his death in recent airstrikes that targeted Iran’s leadership. The shocking revelation has intensified global attention on the escalating conflict that has already reshaped the country’s political landscape.

Shamkhani, a veteran military commander and influential figure in Iran’s national security structure, was killed in late February during a wave of strikes against senior Iranian officials in Tehran. The attacks formed part of a broader escalation involving United States and Israel, which Iran says resulted in the deaths of several key leaders, including Khamenei himself.
According to Iranian media reports, Shamkhani’s remains were buried during a funeral ceremony held at the Imamzadeh Saleh Shrine in northern Tehran. However, reports indicate that the body was missing its head at the time of burial, a detail that has raised disturbing questions about the circumstances of the attack and the condition of the remains recovered after the strike.
Shamkhani had been one of the most powerful figures within Iran’s security establishment for decades. Born in 1955, he served as Iran’s defense minister and later as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council before becoming a senior political adviser to Khamenei. His long career spanned the Iran–Iraq War, as well as key diplomatic and military negotiations involving Iran and Western powers.
The killing of Shamkhani and other top officials is widely seen as one of the most severe blows to Iran’s leadership since the Iranian Revolution. Iranian authorities have condemned the strikes as acts of aggression and vowed retaliation, while large funeral gatherings and mourning ceremonies have taken place across the country.
Despite the loss of several high-ranking leaders, analysts say Iran’s political and military structures remain operational, with temporary leadership arrangements already put in place while the country navigates the crisis.
The grim detail surrounding Shamkhani’s burial has further highlighted the brutality of the conflict and the extent of the destruction caused by the attacks. As tensions in the Middle East continue to rise, the deaths of Iran’s top officials—and the disturbing circumstances of their burials—are likely to deepen the already volatile regional standoff.
