System of a Down Announce Hiatus Following Serj Tankian’s Departure
June 4, 2025 — In a move that has stunned fans worldwide, legendary metal band System of a Down has announced an indefinite hiatus following the departure of frontman Serj Tankian. The announcement was made via the band’s official social media channels and website earlier today, ending weeks of speculation about internal tensions and future plans.
Tankian, known for his powerful vocals and politically charged lyrics, cited personal and creative differences as key reasons for his exit. “After three decades of unforgettable music, activism, and connection with fans, I’ve made the difficult decision to step away from System of a Down,” Tankian wrote in a statement. “This band has been a massive part of my life, but I feel it’s time to move on and focus on my solo projects, humanitarian efforts, and family.”
The band, which includes guitarist/vocalist Daron Malakian, bassist Shavo Odadjian, and drummer John Dolmayan, expressed their support for Tankian’s decision while confirming the hiatus. “We’re grateful for everything we’ve created together and proud of what System of a Down stands for,” they said in a joint message. “Without Serj, we don’t feel it’s right to continue as SOAD.”
System of a Down last released new music in 2020 with the singles “Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz.” While they continued to tour sporadically in the years following, tensions over musical direction and scheduling have been widely reported.
Fans have responded with an outpouring of appreciation and nostalgia across social media, with many holding out hope for a reunion in the future. For now, the band’s legacy — one of fierce creativity and uncompromising political expression — remains firmly intact.
Tankian has confirmed new solo material is on the horizon later this year.
