In 2024, Sporting Kansas City has been actively seeking solutions for their defensive struggles, and one key answer has emerged from their forward group. After a 4-0 defeat to Columbus on June 29, Sporting had conceded 45 goals in 20 regular-season matches, averaging 2.25 goals per game. However, in the subsequent 13 matches across all competitions, they have conceded only 16 goals, reducing their average to 1.23 per game. Notably, this includes another 4-0 loss to Columbus in the Leagues Cup. In their last eight MLS games, Sporting has allowed just eight goals.
While defending is a collective effort, individual contributions have been crucial. One standout is Khiry Shelton, who has significantly impacted the team’s defensive performance. With Shelton starting at right back, Sporting has achieved a record of 5 wins, 2 draws, and 1 loss, conceding only seven goals in his last eight appearances. Shelton was recently named to the MLS Team of the Week for his role in Sporting’s 1-1 draw last Saturday. “I’ve been working hard,” Shelton said, “but it’s a team effort, and I’m just doing my part.”
Sporting’s defensive turnaround can’t be solely credited to one player, but Shelton’s role is pivotal. Manager Peter Vermes has long praised Shelton’s attitude and work ethic, which has helped him transition from an attacker to a defender. Shelton attributes his strong mindset to his military background, growing up on an Army base in Germany, which instilled in him a valuable work ethic and openness to learning.
Vermes has compared Shelton to former MLS right back Ezra Hendrickson, noting their similar physical advantages over wingers. “Ezra always outmatched his opponents,” Vermes said, “and Shelton brings that same presence.” This physical advantage has also been beneficial in defending set pieces, an area where Sporting has struggled in recent years.
Despite the importance of mentality and attitude, Vermes emphasized that effective defending requires more than just a strong mindset. “You can have a good mentality and still not be a good defender,” Vermes noted. Shelton’s ability to excel in one-on-one situations has been particularly impressive. Vermes is pleased with Shelton’s adaptation to the defensive role, which is reflected in the improved team statistics.
Sporting KC will face the Seattle Sounders on Sunday, with kickoff at 6:15 p.m.
