GOAL-MACHINE Paul Mullin is up and running for the new season but out of the ones he’s netted at Wrexham which are the Reds’ star striker’s favourites?
After bagging 26 goals in all competitions last term, Mullin finished as the Reds’ leading scorer for a third season in a row and the frontman also claimed the player of the season award for a record-breaking third successive year.
He returned to the starting line-up for the first time on Saturday after bagging his first goal of the season in a 2-1 EFL Trophy win over Salford City at The SToK Racecourse.
He has now scored an amazing 106 goals in 146 appearances since arriving on a free transfer from Cambridge United where he won the League Two golden boot in 2021 after netting 32 times.
Mullin ended his first season with 32 goals in all competitions and then struck 47 times in 2022-23, helping csecure the National League title following a record-breaking campaign.
But which goals did he pick out when asked what were his favourite two goals for the Reds.
“The one against Stockport in the FA Trophy and the one against Boreham Wood on the day we made sure of promotion back to the Football League,” said Mullin.
“The Stockport goal meant so much because it meant us getting through to Wembley.
“Playing at Wembley is something every player wants and I’d been there with Tranmere. The whole of my family were there and I didn’t play. So to beat Stockport and score that goal was great.”
Mullin’s marvellous goal – a chip from 30 yards – sparked celebrations on and off the pitch and the striker even got a kiss from his fellow frontman Ollie Palmer.
“I didn’t like that bit,” joked Mullin, who then spoke passionately about the goal that sparked Wrexham’s never-to-be-forgotten win that ended their 15-year non-league exile.
Chasing a ball into the corner in front of an empty Kop end, Mullin shrugged off his man and curled in a cracker to put the Reds 2-1 up against Boreham Wood on April 22, 2023 – 45 years to the day Wrexham routed Rotherham United 7-1 to secure promotion to the old Second Division.
“I knew what I wanted to do when I got the ball and just did it,” added Mullin. “It was a great goal but because of the importance of the game and pressure that was on us to win it and get back into the Football League.
“I then got a second and the gaffer took me off in the 88th minute.
“I remember sitting next to Anthony Forde in the dug-out and he said ‘well done’ but I was having none of it as I wanted the final whistle to go we could start celebrating getting the job done.
“That day was one I’ll never forget. I love playing football, scoring goals and I love this football club and the fans too.
“The support they’ve given me has been incredible.”
