Patton and Maynard James Keenan Secretly Working on a Supergroup Called ‘The Wine Snobs’
In a collaboration few saw coming but many will celebrate, rock avant-gardists Mike Patton and Maynard James Keenan are reportedly forming a new supergroup dubbed The Wine Snobs. Sources close to both artists confirm that the pair have been quietly recording material over the past year at a secluded vineyard-turned-studio in Northern California.
Patton, known for his work with Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, and a myriad of experimental projects, is said to be contributing vocals, keys, and “sonic disruption,” while Keenan—frontman of Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer—brings not only his signature vocals but also an obsession with production, lyricism, and viticulture.
Both artists are notorious for defying genre expectations, and The Wine Snobs is reportedly no different. Described by insiders as “a surreal blend of post-metal, jazz-noir, and drunken cabaret,” the sound is allegedly as complex as a 20-year vintage and as abrasive as a corkscrew to the ear—exactly what fans might hope for.
The name The Wine Snobs is more than just a jab at their shared passion for winemaking. Keenan owns Caduceus Cellars in Arizona, and Patton has often voiced his appreciation for fine wine in interviews. Their press rep humorously noted, “This project is decanted for complexity—aged, not filtered.”
A cryptic teaser video was posted briefly on a private Vimeo account linked to Ipecac Recordings before being taken down. No official release date has been announced, but rumors suggest a surprise debut album may drop during harvest season—perhaps accompanied by a limited-edition wine pairing.
Until then, fans are left to swirl, sniff, and speculate on what two of alternative music’s most unpredictable minds will uncork next.
