Patti Scialfa, Bruce Springsteen’s Wife and Bandmate, Reveals Blood Cancer Diagnosis
Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and his wife since 1991, has publicly disclosed her battle with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer affecting plasma cells. She was diagnosed in 2018, a revelation shared in the recent documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024.
In the documentary, Scialfa discusses the challenges her condition poses to touring, stating, “Touring has become a challenge for me… [The illness] affects my immune system so I just have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go.” Despite these challenges, she continues to make occasional appearances, cherishing moments when she can join the band on stage.
On September 15, 2024, Scialfa joined Springsteen for a poignant performance of “Tougher Than The Rest” at the Sea.Hear.Now music festival in Asbury Park, marking a rare public appearance since her diagnosis. The emotional duet resonated deeply with fans, highlighting the couple’s enduring partnership both personally and professionally.
The Road Diary documentary offers an intimate look into the band’s dynamics, featuring archival footage and candid interviews. It addresses themes of aging and mortality, providing fans with a deeper understanding of the personal journeys of Springsteen and his bandmates. The film will be available for streaming on Hulu and Disney+ starting October 25, 2024.
Bruce Springsteen has also faced health challenges, including treatment for peptic ulcer disease and vocal issues, which led to postponed tour dates. Despite these obstacles, the couple continues to demonstrate resilience, balancing their health considerations with their passion for music.
