Glenn Danzig Announces Permanent Departure from The Misfits: “It’s Time to Close That Coffin”
In a move that marks the end of an era, Glenn Danzig has officially announced his permanent departure from The Misfits, the legendary horror punk band he co-founded in 1977. The news was confirmed in a statement released by Danzig earlier today, in which he thanked fans for decades of loyalty and explained his decision to step away from the band for good.
“I’ve said all I needed to say with The Misfits,” Danzig wrote. “The reunion shows were a way to give something back to the fans who supported us from the beginning. But for me, it’s time to close that coffin and move on.”
Danzig, whose songwriting and unmistakable voice helped define the horror punk genre, reunited with original bassist Jerry Only and guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein in 2016 after decades of legal disputes and silence. The “Original Misfits” went on to perform a series of massive, sold-out shows in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, rekindling the band’s cult status and introducing their dark, energetic sound to a new generation.
While fans had long hoped for a full-fledged Misfits tour or new material from the classic lineup, Danzig’s departure confirms that such plans are no longer on the table. Jerry Only is expected to continue performing under the Misfits name, a practice he’s maintained since the 1990s, though no official announcement has been made regarding future lineups.
Danzig assured fans he will remain musically active, focusing on his solo work and film projects. “The Misfits will always be a part of who I am, but now it’s time for something darker, something new,” he said.
Fans worldwide are mourning the final curtain on a legacy that redefined punk forever.
