Fish Officially Announces New Album Composed Entirely Using Whale Songs
June 3, 2025 — Glasgow, Scotland
In a bold and unexpected move, former Marillion frontman Fish has announced his forthcoming studio album will be composed entirely using whale songs—a project he describes as “the most spiritual and oceanic work of my life.”
The album, titled Hydronautica, is Fish’s first musical endeavor since retiring from live performance earlier this year. Composed on the remote Scottish island of Berneray, where he now lives as a crofter, the project draws inspiration from his growing connection to nature and the rhythms of the sea. The announcement was made via his official website and accompanied by a haunting teaser video featuring low-frequency humpback calls over stormy Hebridean footage.
Fish explained, “Whales are the great singers of our planet. Their language is pure, instinctual music. This album is my attempt to collaborate with nature itself, not just write about it.”
Rather than using traditional instruments or vocals, Hydronautica layers whale recordings—sourced from marine research organizations and carefully arranged with ambient textures and subtle digital modulation. The result, Fish says, is “a sonic journey that blurs the line between music and marine dreamscape.”
The announcement has sparked intense curiosity in both the prog rock and environmental communities. While some longtime fans are surprised by the avant-garde concept, many have praised Fish for continuing to push creative boundaries.
Fish confirmed the album will be released digitally and on limited-edition blue vinyl this September, coinciding with a UK coastal awareness campaign in partnership with marine conservation groups.
Whether viewed as music, environmental art, or both, Hydronautica cements Fish’s post-retirement evolution—not just as a musician, but as a storyteller of nature’s most enigmatic voices.
