He recently handed out a bold prediction for the upcoming NBA season.
DeRozan was asked to share his boldest take for the season and paused for a moment before saying his Kings are going to make it to the Western Conference Finals, via NBACentral.
The Kings haven’t won a playoff series since 2004, and two seasons ago made the playoffs for the first time since 2006, so predicting a conference finals appearance is certainly bold.
Last season, Sacramento went 46-36 and was eliminated in the play-in tournament to miss the 2024 NBA Playoffs altogether despite winning just two fewer games than it did in the previous season when it was the No. 3 seed.
DeRozan is the Kings’ big addition this offseason and will be expected to stabilize a young core built around De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis and Keegan Murray.
The 35-year-old will step into the role occupied by Harrison Barnes over the past few seasons and should be an immediate upgrade, though many fans are concerned that DeRozan doesn’t solve the defensive problems the Kings have had over the past few seasons.
That said, he believes a long playoff run is possible despite a Western Conference field that is loaded at the top with the presence of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves and the defending conference champion Dallas Mavericks.
