Former Newcastle United defender Daryl Janmaat has opened up in a candid and emotional interview about his past struggles with cocaine addiction, admitting it played a major role in the breakdown of his marriage and caused significant harm in his personal life.
The former Netherlands international spoke honestly about the challenges he faced during a difficult period after his playing career began to slow down. Janmaat revealed that what started as occasional use escalated into dependency, affecting not only his mental health but also his closest relationships.
“It caused a lot of damage,” Janmaat admitted. “I lost focus, I hurt the people around me, and ultimately it destroyed my marriage. That’s something I deeply regret.”
Janmaat, who also featured prominently in the Premier League during his time in England, said the pressures of professional football, combined with personal struggles off the pitch, contributed to his downward spiral. He described feeling isolated and struggling to cope with the transition away from the spotlight.
The 34-year-old emphasized that addiction can affect anyone, regardless of career success or public image. He explained that shame and fear initially stopped him from seeking help, prolonging the damage.
“When you’re in it, you don’t see clearly. You think you’re in control. But you’re not. It takes over,” he said.
Since confronting his addiction, Janmaat says he has taken steps toward recovery, including seeking professional support and rebuilding relationships. While acknowledging that some consequences cannot be undone, he expressed hope that sharing his story might help others facing similar battles.
Mental health advocates have praised Janmaat for his honesty, noting that public figures speaking openly about addiction can reduce stigma and encourage people to seek assistance.
Now focused on rebuilding his life beyond football, Janmaat says accountability and personal growth are his priorities. “I can’t change the past,” he reflected, “but I can choose how I move forward.”
If you or someone you know is struggling with substance addiction, seeking professional help and support services can make a critical difference.
