The FIA and all 11 Formula 1 teams have agreed on immediate, targeted adjustments to the 2026 technical and sporting regulations

The FIA and all 11 Formula 1 teams have agreed on immediate, targeted adjustments to the 2026 technical and sporting regulations to improve performance and safety, effective from the Miami Grand Prix on May 3. These changes—the most significant mid-season intervention in the hybrid era—address driver concerns over “superclipping” (power loss at high speeds) by reducing battery recharge requirements and increasing peak power to 350kW.

Key 2026 Regulation Adjustments (Effective Miami GP):
  • Superclipping Reduction: Maximum permitted recharge is reduced from 8MJ to 7MJ, and peak superclip power is increased from
    250
    kW

    to

    350
    kW

, reducing the need for “lift-and-coast”.

  • Race Power & MGU-K: MGU-K deployment is maintained at
    350
    kW

    for acceleration, capped at

    250
    kW

in other areas, with maximum boost in races now capped at

    +150
    kW

    .

  • Safety & Start Systems: A new “low power start” detection system will trigger automatic MGU-K deployment to prevent stalled cars and improve acceleration, while rear/lateral flashing lights warn drivers behind.
  • Wet Weather Handling: Intermediate tire blanket temperatures are increased to improve initial grip, while maximum ERS deployment is reduced to enhance car control.
  • Race Regulation: The number of races where alternative, lower energy limits may apply has expanded from 8 to 12
These refinements were finalized following a meeting between the FIA, team principals, and power unit manufacturer CEOs to address early-season performance and安全 (safety) concerns. The changes now await formal ratification via a World Motor Sport Council e-vote
