Headline: Mike Herrera Announces Permanent Departure from MxPx After Nearly 33 Years
In a heartfelt open letter dated June 12, 2025, Mike Herrera, founding member, bassist, lead vocalist, and primary songwriter of MxPx, confirmed his permanent departure from the band he co-founded back in 1992. Reflecting on a journey spanning over three decades, Herrera expressed immense gratitude for the musical milestones and the community they built together, even as he revealed his decision to “pass the torch” and venture into new creative directions.
Herrera’s announcement marks the end of an era for MxPx. He recalled highlights like the breakout success of Life in General in 1996 and their successful major-label run. “I’m proud of the music we’ve made and the community we’ve built—but I’ve reached a point where I need to follow a different path,” he shared in the letter.
The departure takes effect immediately, and the remaining members—Yuri Ruley (drums) and Tom Wisniewski (guitar)—are now exploring the band’s future. In their statement, they paid tribute to Herrera’s influence: “Mike’s voice, lyrics, and vision have defined MxPx from day one. His legacy is woven into the fabric of everything we’ve done.”
Herrera emphasized this isn’t goodbye, but a new chapter. He hinted at an upcoming solo album, blending Americana, punk, and acoustic elements, as well as continued growth of his country-punk side project, Mike Herrera’s Tumbledown. Fans can also expect more episodes of his popular podcast, The Mike Herrera Hour.
Fans flooded social media with messages of support and nostalgia. One shared: “MxPx wouldn’t be MxPx without Mike—thanks for the soundtrack of our lives.” Rumors are swirling about a farewell tour later this year, offering a final opportunity to hear Herrera perform classic MxPx tracks live.
As one chapter closes, a new one begins—for both Herrera and the future of MxPx. The rock world watches with gratitude and anticipation for what comes next.
