David Gilmour Honored as Pink Floyd Enters UK Music Hall of Fame

LONDON, UK – November 16, 2005 – Legendary guitarist and vocalist David Gilmour, best known for his iconic work with Pink Floyd, was a central figure as the progressive rock giants were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame at a star-studded ceremony held at Alexandra Palace. The event celebrated Pink Floyd’s immense and enduring influence on popular music, solidifying their place in British musical history.

Gilmour, alongside drummer Nick Mason, accepted the prestigious award on behalf of the band. While Roger Waters participated via a live video link from Rome, and the late Richard Wright was also honored, the evening saw Gilmour and Mason represent the band physically on stage.

The induction was introduced by none other than The Who’s Pete Townshend, who delivered a witty and humble speech acknowledging the impact of all five past and present members of Pink Floyd, including the band’s founder, Syd Barrett. Townshend humorously recounted how he once skipped a Who concert to take Eric Clapton to a Pink Floyd show in 1967, underscoring the band’s early and undeniable allure.

In their acceptance speech, Gilmour remarked, “Well, there’s only two of us tonight,” acknowledging Wright’s absence due to illness. He also reflected on the band’s long journey, from their early days to their global success. There was a moment of subtle tension when Gilmour thanked “all the passengers on this fabulous ride we’ve been on,” a line that some interpreted as a nod to the band’s sometimes tumultuous history with Roger Waters.

Despite earlier rumors, Pink Floyd did not perform at the ceremony. However, David Gilmour did participate in a tribute to the late DJ John Peel, performing the Buzzcocks’ “Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve)” alongside other artists.

The induction ceremony, which was televised on Channel 4 and broadcast live on BBC Radio 2, was a testament to Pink Floyd’s monumental contribution to music, recognized by a panel of over 60 artists, journalists, broadcasters, and executives. The night was a fitting tribute to a band that redefined the soundscape of rock music and continues to captivate generations with its groundbreaking albums and live performances.
