A massive plume of thick, black smoke was seen billowing from Gainbridge Fieldhouse early Tuesday evening, sending shockwaves through downtown Indianapolis and forcing an immediate evacuation of the venue. According to witness reports, flames were visible near the upper concourse, with emergency sirens wailing across the city as over a dozen fire crews rushed to the scene.
“At first, I thought it was just fog from a special effect, but then I saw the black smoke and the flashing lights—this was real,” said Marcus T., a season ticket holder who was arriving for a pre-game event. “People were running out, covering their faces. It was pure chaos.”
Authorities confirmed that the fire originated in a mechanical room on the east side of the arena, quickly spreading to an adjacent storage area. Firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, fearing structural damage to the iconic home of the Indiana Fever and the Indiana Pacers. Thick smoke continued to pour from the roof, visible for miles.
“There is no threat to the public at this time, but the facility will remain closed pending a full investigation,” said a Fire Department spokesperson. “All games and events are postponed indefinitely.”
The Indiana Fever released a brief statement, saying, “We are grateful to our first responders and ask for prayers for our arena staff and the safety of all involved.”
While no injuries were reported, the incident has left the city reeling. As night fell, the sky above Gainbridge Fieldhouse remained stained by the dark smoke, a grim reminder of the flames that now threaten an iconic Hoosier landmark.
