Netflix to Stream Star-Studded Gordon Lightfoot Tribute Concert Featuring Surprise Rush Reunion

Netflix has announced plans to stream the highly acclaimed “Celebrating Gordon Lightfoot” tribute concert, held at Toronto’s historic Massey Hall on May 23, 2024. The event honored the late Canadian folk legend Gordon Lightfoot, who passed away in May 2023 at the age of 84. The concert featured a surprise reunion of Rush’s Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, marking one of their rare performances together since the band’s final tour in 2015.

The sold-out concert brought together a diverse lineup of Canadian artists to pay homage to Lightfoot’s enduring legacy. Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson joined Blue Rodeo to perform Lightfoot’s 1966 classic “The Way I Feel,” delivering a heartfelt rendition that included vocals from Lee and an acoustic solo by Lifeson. Lee expressed the significance of the tribute, stating, “Gordon Lightfoot was to musicians of my generation a true Canadian musical hero — and to boot he was a really sweet person.”

The evening also featured performances by Lightfoot’s youngest daughter, folk singer Meredith Moon, who shared personal memories and performed a three-song set including “Oh So Sweet,” “Slow Moving Train,” and a duet of “If You Could Read My Mind” with Serena Ryder. Other notable performances included Tom Cochrane’s rendition of “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” Dallas Green’s version of “Sundown,” and contributions from Sylvia Tyson, Julian Taylor, Kathleen Edwards, and Allison Russell.

The concert concluded with all artists joining together for a performance of “Summerside of Life.” The event was filmed for an edition of “CBC Music Live at Massey Hall” and will be available for streaming on Netflix, bringing this memorable tribute to a global audience.

Gordon Lightfoot’s profound impact on Canadian music and culture was evident throughout the evening, as artists and fans alike celebrated his contributions to the nation’s musical heritage. The Netflix special promises to be a fitting homage to Lightfoot’s enduring legacy.
