  • King Diamond Officially Departs Mercyful Fate, Citing Creative Differences and Focus on Solo Career

In a surprising turn of events, legendary heavy metal vocalist King Diamond has officially announced his departure from Mercyful Fate, marking the end of one of metal’s most iconic partnerships. The announcement was made via King Diamond’s official social media accounts early Friday morning, citing “creative differences” and a renewed focus on his long-standing solo band.

“This was not an easy decision,” King Diamond wrote. “Mercyful Fate has been a massive part of my life and legacy. However, after much thought and discussion, I feel it’s time to fully dedicate myself to the next chapter of the King Diamond band. The energy and inspiration I feel for our upcoming album is something I need to honor completely.”

The split appears to be amicable, with guitarist Hank Shermann also issuing a statement: “We respect King’s decision and wish him the best. Mercyful Fate will continue, and we’re currently evaluating the future lineup.”

King Diamond and Mercyful Fate first made waves in the early 1980s with their theatrical stage presence and genre-defining albums like Melissa and Don’t Break the Oath. After several hiatuses and reunions, the band reformed again in 2019 and performed select festival dates through 2022–2024, with promises of new music that never fully materialized.

Fans have expressed a mix of disappointment and understanding online. Many are hopeful that the split will mean more frequent releases and tours from King Diamond’s solo band, which hasn’t released a full studio album since The Puppet Master in 2003.

King concluded his statement by promising “something wicked” is coming soon from his solo project — potentially hinting at long-awaited updates on the Institute album.

More updates are expected in the

coming weeks.
