Fernando Ribeiro Bids Farewell to Moonspell, Closing a Defining Chapter in Gothic Metal
Lisbon, Portugal – May 27, 2025
Fernando Ribeiro, the iconic voice and lyrical force behind Moonspell, has officially announced his departure from the legendary Portuguese gothic metal band. After more than three decades fronting the group, Ribeiro’s exit marks the end of an era that helped shape the sound and soul of dark metal across the globe.
Ribeiro co-founded Moonspell in 1992, transforming the underground metal scene with the release of their groundbreaking debut Wolfheart in 1995. Known for his haunting baritone, philosophical lyrics, and theatrical stage presence, Ribeiro became the unmistakable face of the band and a cultural ambassador for Portuguese metal.
In a personal statement released today, Ribeiro shared, “I’ve given my heart, soul, and voice to Moonspell for over 30 years. It has been the journey of a lifetime, but now I feel called to new creative territories. This is not an end, but a transformation.”
Moonspell’s remaining members—guitarist Ricardo Amorim, bassist Aires Pereira, drummer Hugo Ribeiro, and keyboardist Pedro Paixão—have confirmed their intention to carry the band forward. While Ribeiro’s absence will be deeply felt, the band emphasized their respect for his decision and commitment to honoring the group’s legacy with future performances and recordings.
The departure comes at a pivotal time, with Moonspell preparing for a special 30th anniversary tour celebrating Wolfheart. Fans had anticipated the commemorative shows to be nostalgic, but Ribeiro’s farewell adds an emotional resonance to the events.
As Moonspell looks to the future, Ribeiro’s next steps remain a subject of keen interest. Known also for his work as a poet and writer, he is expected to continue exploring artistic projects outside of music.
Ribeiro’s departure closes a vital chapter in gothic metal history—one that will resonate for
years to come.
