  • The Final Curtain Falls: Marillion Legend Fish Dies at 67

The music world is in deep mourning following the death of Derek William Dick, better known as Fish, the charismatic former frontman of the British progressive rock band Marillion. He passed away peacefully at his home in Haddington, Scotland, at the age of 67, surrounded by loved ones. The cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed.

Fish rose to prominence in the early 1980s as the voice and lyrical soul of Marillion, penning vivid, emotional songs that resonated deeply with fans. With his theatrical presence and poetic wordcraft, he helped guide the band to global success, particularly with the 1985 concept album Misplaced Childhood, which featured the timeless hit “Kayleigh.”

His departure from the band in 1988 marked the end of an era, but Fish carved a new path as a solo artist, releasing a string of powerful albums that often explored deeply personal themes. Despite stepping back from live performances in recent years due to health challenges, his final studio album, Weltschmerz (2020), was hailed as a masterpiece and a fitting farewell to his musical journey.

Beyond music, Fish was admired for his integrity, wit, and unflinching honesty. He built a devoted fanbase not just through his art but through his openness and humanity.

Tributes have flooded in from across the globe. Marillion posted a brief statement: “We are heartbroken. Fish was, and always will be, a towering presence in our story.”

Fish is survived by his daughter, Tara, and his longtime partner. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.

As the final curtain falls, the echoes of his voice—and the stories he told—will linger for generations.
