Thrash Metal World Mourns: Steve “Zetro” Souza of Exodus Passes Away at 60

In a devastating blow to the global metal community, Steve “Zetro” Souza, the iconic frontman of the legendary Bay Area thrash band Exodus, has passed away at the age of 60. News of his death was confirmed earlier today by bandmates and family members, sending shockwaves through the music world and beyond.

Souza, who helped define an entire generation of aggressive, uncompromising metal, was more than just a vocalist — he was a towering figure in thrash history. Known for his distinct snarling voice, relentless energy on stage, and deep love for the genre, Zetro’s contributions shaped the identity of Exodus and inspired countless musicians across the globe.

No cause of death has been officially announced, but early reports suggest it was sudden and unexpected. Fans, fellow musicians, and friends have flooded social media with tributes, remembering Souza not only as a thrash pioneer but as a man of great passion, humor, and loyalty.

Gary Holt, Exodus guitarist and longtime friend, shared a heartfelt message:

“Zetro wasn’t just our frontman — he was our brother. I’ve known him for most of my life. We made history together, we fought, we laughed, and we screamed our lungs out on every stage. I can’t believe he’s gone. The world just lost one of the greats.”

Souza joined Exodus in 1986, stepping in after original vocalist Paul Baloff. He brought a sharper edge to the band’s already ferocious sound, leading them through some of their most classic records, including Pleasures of the Flesh, Fabulous Disaster, and Tempo of the Damned. After several hiatuses and returns, Souza rejoined the band in 2014, bringing new life to Exodus with albums like Blood In, Blood Out and Persona Non Grata.

Outside of music, Zetro was also the host of Zetro’s Toxic Vault, a YouTube channel where he interviewed metal legends and shared raw, unfiltered stories from the road. His passion for metal history and his fans was palpable, and he remained deeply connected to the scene until his final days.

As fans light candles, share memories, and blast Exodus classics in his honor, one thing is certain: Steve “Zetro” Souza’s voice, spirit, and legacy will never fade. His music will continue to scream through the speakers of generations to come — louder and more powerful than ever.

Rest in power, Zetro. The stage will never be the same without you.
