Marillion Announces Indefinite Hiatus Following Over Four Decades of Music
May 15, 2025 — London, UK
British progressive rock icons Marillion have officially announced an indefinite hiatus, bringing a temporary halt to their decades-spanning career just months before the planned release of their highly anticipated new album, The Hollow Sky.
The announcement was made today via the band’s official website and social media platforms, sparking an outpouring of emotion from fans around the world. In their statement, Marillion said:
“After 45 years of making music together, we’ve decided to step away—for now. This isn’t a farewell, but a much-needed pause to reflect, recharge, and explore life outside the spotlight.”
The news comes as a surprise to many, as the band had recently completed recording sessions for The Hollow Sky, a concept album that was set to launch a global tour beginning in October. While the band confirmed the album will still be released this fall, all tour plans have been cancelled.
Frontman Steve Hogarth offered further context: “We’re immensely proud of what we’ve created with this new record. But before we step on another stage, we need to take care of ourselves—mentally, emotionally, creatively. This isn’t goodbye. It’s see you later.”
Marillion rose to prominence in the 1980s with albums like Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws, and redefined themselves in the 1990s under Hogarth’s leadership. Over the years, they became pioneers of direct-to-fan engagement and crowdfunding in music.
Band members have hinted at pursuing solo work during the hiatus, and they’ve left the door open for a return. Until then, The Hollow Sky will serve as a poignant bookmark in Marillion’s rich legacy—a final offering before the silence.
