The final standings of the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix remain uncertain after the FIA confirmed that a formal review hearing regarding Pierre Gasly’s penalties will take place in Barcelona on Thursday.
Gasly originally crossed the finish line in third place after an impressive performance on the streets of Monte Carlo. However, the Alpine driver was later handed two separate five-second penalties for exceeding the pit-lane speed limit, causing him to fall from third to seventh in the official classification.
Following the race, Gasly and Alpine strongly disputed the decision. The French driver admitted he was devastated by the outcome and called on Formula 1’s governing body to take another look at the circumstances surrounding the penalties.
The FIA has now agreed to hear Alpine’s request through the right-to-review process. Thursday’s hearing will be the first stage of that procedure, with stewards examining whether the team has presented significant new evidence that was unavailable when the original ruling was made.
Only if the stewards unanimously agree that the new evidence is relevant and substantial will the case move forward to a second stage. At that point, the penalties themselves could be reconsidered and potentially overturned.
A successful appeal could have a major impact on the race results. Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar currently occupies third place after benefiting from Gasly’s penalties. If the sanctions are removed, Gasly would regain his podium finish and move back to third, while Hadjar would drop to fourth
The hearing has therefore become one of the most important off-track developments of the season, with both drivers waiting to learn whether the Monaco Grand Prix classification will remain unchanged or be rewritten days after the race.
The FIA’s decision in Barcelona could ultimately determine who officially stands on the Monaco podium and whether Gasly’s strong drive will finally receive the result it earned on track.
