Liverpool in ‘strong position’ to agree third biggest signing in their history – David Ornstein

Posted on June 4, 2026 by Kat Jay

Liverpool are reportedly edging closer to one of the most significant transfers in their history, with respected journalist David Ornstein suggesting the club is now in a “strong position” to land a marquee attacking target this summer. The update has sparked excitement among supporters, as the Reds look to reshape their squad ahead of a new era at Anfield.

The player at the centre of the speculation is highly-rated RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, a rising star who has quickly become one of the most sought-after young attackers in European football. Despite being just 19 years old, Diomande has already delivered an impressive return of goals and assists, underlining why Liverpool are prepared to invest heavily in his signature.

According to Ornstein’s report, Liverpool have moved ahead of several rivals in the race and are actively working behind the scenes to secure the deal. The club has reportedly made strong progress in convincing the player of their long-term project, positioning themselves as serious contenders should negotiations with RB Leipzig intensify.

What makes this potential transfer even more remarkable is its scale. Any deal for Diomande is expected to exceed €100 million, which would make it the third most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history. Only previous blockbuster arrivals like Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz would rank above it in terms of transfer fee, highlighting the magnitude of the club’s ambition.

Liverpool’s urgency in pursuing a winger of Diomande’s profile is no coincidence. The anticipated departure of Mohamed Salah has left a major void in the squad, particularly on the right flank. Replacing a player of Salah’s calibre is no easy task, and the club appears determined to secure a long-term successor capable of transforming their attacking play.

Diomande’s attributes make him an ideal candidate for that role. Known for his blistering pace, two-footed ability, and creativity in one-on-one situations, he offers the kind of unpredictability that Liverpool’s attack has lacked at times. His ability to both score and create chances aligns perfectly with the demands of modern wide forwards in elite teams.

However, Liverpool’s path to securing the deal is far from straightforward. RB Leipzig are keen to retain the young star for at least another season, especially after qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. Additionally, other top European clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, are monitoring the situation and could yet enter the race if circumstances change.

Despite these challenges, Ornstein’s update suggests Liverpool have already laid crucial groundwork. By building a strong relationship with the player and his representatives, the club has given itself a significant advantage should Leipzig decide to entertain offers. This proactive approach reflects a broader strategy of targeting elite young talent before their value climbs even higher.

Beyond the individual transfer, this move signals Liverpool’s intent to remain competitive at the highest level. After investing heavily in recent windows, the club appears ready to continue spending in order to rebuild and evolve its squad. The pursuit of Diomande fits into a wider plan to inject youth, pace, and dynamism into the team.

There is also a symbolic element to the deal. Signing one of Europe’s brightest prospects for a fee exceeding €100 million would send a clear message to rivals that Liverpool are not entering a transitional phase quietly. Instead, they are aiming to reassert themselves as a dominant force both domestically and in Europe.

As the transfer window unfolds, all eyes will be on how negotiations develop. If Liverpool can finalize the deal, it could mark a defining moment in their summer business—one that shapes the club’s attacking identity for years to come.
