There remains uncertainty over the future of one Sheffield Wednesday summer transfer target
Sheffield Wednesday are having a little break from matters in the summer transfer window, as they gear up for the new 2024/25 Championship season.
The Owls’ first-team squad are currently Germany preparing for a pre-season friendly against Werder Bremen on Friday.
Danny Rohl and his team last played Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, with the Owls losing 4-0 in what was their second pre-season friendly.
After the Bremen game, Sheffield Wednesday play Leganes in Liam Palmer’s testimonial before kick-starting the new campaign with a home game vs Plymouth Argyle.
Before then, many expect Sheffield Wednesday to add to their nine summer signings so far.
The Owls are pushing to re-sign Ike Ugbo on a permanent deal from Troyes but appear to be hitting some stumbling blocks on that front.
Sheffield Wednesday have also lodged a bid for former Celtic gem Karamoko Dembele, who remains Ligue 1 Brest, where his future remains uncertain.
The latest on Sheffield Wednesday pursuit of Karamoko Dembele
Dembele, 21, has been told he can leave Brest this summer, despite his impressive 2023/24 loan spell with Blackpool in League One, and despite being under contract until 2026.
Recent reports revealed that Sheffield Wednesday are among the sides to have lodged a bid for Dembele.
Derby County are another, and it was claimed that Portsmouth have lodged a bid too, though Pompey boss John Mousinho has played down that rumour.
Since, Dembele has posted a picture on Instagram of himself in pre-season preparations with Brest, captioned ‘Preparations continue’.
Will Sheffield Wednesday sign Karamoko Dembele this summer
It certainly looks like Dembele is at something of a crossroads in his career, with plenty of interest in the player and a potential return to the UK on the cards.
Reports that he was set to leave Brest came earlier this summer. But Dembele’s latest post may suggest that Brest want to take a second look at the player.
He showed a lot of promise with Blackpool last season and could play a back-up role with Brest next time round, with the French club playing in the Champions League next season.
That would surely be enticing for Dembele who may be eager to make it work at Brest, despite interest from the Championship.
Dembele looks like a move to may come later in the summer transfer window for Sheffield Wednesday, should it materialise at all.
