Larry Bird did not hold back Friday night after the Indiana Fever suffered a crushing 104-102 defeat against the Washington Mystics in a dramatic late-game collapse that stunned fans inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
The Fever appeared in control for most of the fourth quarter, leading by eight points with less than four minutes remaining. But costly turnovers, poor defensive communication, and missed free throws allowed Washington to storm back and steal the victory in the final seconds.
Following the game, Bird reportedly criticized Fever head coach Stephanie White and star guard Kelsey Mitchell during a heated postgame discussion near the tunnel area.
“You cannot play winning basketball without discipline,” Bird allegedly said. “The talent is there, but the decision-making late in games has been unacceptable.”
Sources close to the organization claimed Bird was especially frustrated with the Fever’s defensive breakdowns in the final two possessions. The Mystics capitalized with back-to-back clutch baskets, including a game-winning jumper with only 1.8 seconds left on the clock.
Mitchell, who finished with 24 points, struggled in the closing moments with two critical turnovers that shifted momentum entirely in Washington’s favor. Meanwhile, White faced criticism from fans after choosing not to call a timeout during the Fever’s final possession.
Social media quickly erupted after reports of Bird’s comments surfaced online. Some fans supported the Hall of Famer’s tough-love approach, while others believed the criticism was too harsh so early in the season.
Despite the controversy, White defended her team during the postgame press conference.
“We’ll learn from it,” she said. “This group is still growing, and tough losses are part of the process.”
The Fever now face mounting pressure heading into their next matchup, while Bird’s public frustration has only intensified the spotlight surrounding the team’s shaky
start to the season.
