Tempers boiled over Friday night as Hailey Van Lith was dramatically ejected during the Connecticut Sun 101-92 defeat to the Las Vegas Aces after a fiery confrontation with fellow guard Chennedy Carter late in the third quarter.
The game had already been packed with intensity as both teams battled physically from the opening tip, but tensions finally exploded with just under four minutes remaining in the period. Van Lith and Carter became tangled near midcourt while fighting for a loose ball, leading to a shoving exchange that quickly drew players and officials into the chaos.
Witnesses inside Michelob ULTRA Arena described the crowd erupting as Carter appeared to exchange heated words with Van Lith before the rookie guard retaliated with a hard shoulder bump that sent Carter stumbling backward. Officials immediately stopped play and reviewed the incident for several minutes.
After the review, referees assessed Van Lith with a Flagrant 2 foul and an automatic ejection, while Carter received a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct. Fans showered the court with boos as Van Lith walked toward the locker room visibly frustrated, clapping sarcastically at the officials before disappearing down the tunnel.
Despite the emotional setback, Connecticut attempted a late comeback behind strong performances from the Sun bench, but the Aces maintained control throughout the fourth quarter. Las Vegas capitalized on turnovers and knocked down key three-pointers to seal the nine-point victory.
Following the game, Sun head coach Stephanie White defended her player’s competitiveness but admitted emotions got the better of the situation.
