In a game that showcased both dominant skill and fiery emotion, the U.S. women’s basketball team secured a commanding 84-70 victory over Spain in an qualifying match. However, the win was overshadowed by a dramatic fourth-quarter incident that led to the ejection of American star Angel Reese.
The clash occurred with just under five minutes remaining and Team USA holding a 15-point lead. Following a physical battle for a rebound, Spain’s veteran captain, Alba Torrens, was whistled for a foul on Reese. Words were exchanged immediately, with Reese taking exception to contact she deemed excessive. The confrontation escalated rapidly at mid-court, with both players stepping chest-to-chest and exchanging heated words. Officials and teammates rushed to separate them, but not before Reese was assessed two technical fouls for what officials deemed “confrontational and unsportsmanlike conduct,” resulting in an automatic ejection.
Reese, who had been a force all night with 18 points and 12 rebounds, stormed off the court to a chorus of mixed reactions from the crowd. Torrens received a single technical foul for her role in the altercation.
Team USA’s coach, Cheryl Reeve, addressed the incident post-game, stating, “Angel plays with a passion that fuels her and this team. Emotions run high in these high-stakes games. We’ll address it internally, but I’m proud of how the team closed out a tough win against a world-class opponent.”
The victory solidifies Team USA’s path toward Paris, but the spotlight now shifts to potential disciplinary review from governing bodies and the team’s ability to harness its competitive fire without crossing the line. Reese was not available for comment after the game.
