FIA Rule Changes Spark Major Ferrari Fears as Lewis Hamilton’s 2026 Title Dream Faces Growing Pressure

Posted on May 7, 2026 by MK

The 2026 Formula 1 season is rapidly turning into one of the most controversial campaigns in recent memory, with growing criticism surrounding the FIA’s new power unit and energy management regulations. What was introduced as a revolutionary step toward sustainability and technological advancement is now being blamed for inconsistent racing, unpredictable deployment behavior, and widening performance gaps between teams. As frustration grows inside the paddock, Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton may be among the biggest victims of the unfolding controversy.

Several top drivers have already voiced concerns about the current regulations. Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, and Lando Norris have all questioned the effectiveness of the new energy deployment system, arguing that the racing no longer feels natural in certain phases of a Grand Prix. Drivers have repeatedly complained about sudden losses in acceleration, strange battery deployment patterns, and moments where cars appear significantly slower on straights despite similar setups. The criticism intensified after the Miami Grand Prix, where multiple drivers struggled with inconsistent power delivery during wheel-to-wheel battles.

For Ferrari, however, the situation appears even more alarming. Reports from within the paddock continue to suggest that the Scuderia is suffering from major engine deployment inefficiencies compared to Mercedes. While Ferrari still possesses impressive qualifying pace and strong cornering ability, their race performance has repeatedly collapsed during longer stints where energy management becomes critical. This has created a growing belief that Mercedes has mastered the new regulations far better than its rivals, particularly when it comes to harvesting and deploying electrical energy under race conditions.

The FIA has already responded to pressure from teams and drivers by confirming adjustments to certain aspects of the regulations, especially those related to energy harvesting and deployment behavior. While officials insist the changes are intended to improve fairness and safety, many insiders believe the tweaks are effectively an admission that the original system created unintended problems. Ferrari supporters are now anxiously waiting to see whether these modifications will help close the gap to Mercedes or further expose the weaknesses of the SF-26 package.

Lewis Hamilton’s arrival at Ferrari was supposed to ignite one final world championship charge, but the early signs of the season have raised serious concerns about whether the team can realistically challenge for the title under the current regulations. Despite flashes of competitiveness, Ferrari have struggled to maintain consistency over full race distances. Strategic confusion, deployment limitations, and reliability concerns have already cost valuable points during the opening races of the season. Meanwhile, Mercedes and teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli continue to capitalize on every opportunity, rapidly building momentum in both championships.

What makes the situation even more dangerous for Ferrari is the pace at which Mercedes is developing its understanding of the new generation cars. The Silver Arrows appear extremely comfortable with the balance between battery deployment, engine performance, and tire management — an area where Ferrari continues to look vulnerable. If the Scuderia cannot solve these problems before the European leg of the season intensifies, Hamilton’s hopes of securing a historic eighth world championship may begin slipping away far earlier than expected.

There is also growing tension within the sport over whether the 2026 regulations have unintentionally damaged the quality of racing itself. Fans, analysts, and former drivers have criticized the current era for producing awkward racing scenarios where drivers are forced to manage energy rather than push flat-out. Some have even compared parts of races to endurance management rather than traditional Formula 1 aggression. These complaints have placed the FIA under enormous pressure to continue making adjustments throughout the season.

Looking ahead to the Canadian Grand Prix and beyond, Ferrari faces a defining stretch in its season. The team reportedly has upgrades planned, but whether those improvements will be enough to counter Mercedes’ dominance remains uncertain. Hamilton’s experience and racecraft still make him a dangerous contender, but Formula 1 history has shown that talent alone cannot overcome a technical disadvantage for long.

If Ferrari fails to unlock better deployment efficiency soon, the championship fight could slowly evolve into a two-team battle between Mercedes and McLaren, leaving Hamilton and Charles Leclerc fighting only for occasional podiums instead of titles. And with the FIA continuing to tweak regulations mid-season, the pressure inside Maranello is only becoming more intense.
