In a shocking turn of events at the Chinese Grand Prix weekend, Mercedes’ young sensation Andrea Kimi Antonelli has been ruled out of the main race due to a serious broken nose sustained during a high-speed incident in Friday’s practice session.

Medical teams rushed to the scene as Antonelli climbed out gingerly, clutching his face. Initial checks in the medical center confirmed a fractured nose, severe swelling, and potential concussion symptoms. Team doctors, in consultation with FIA medical delegates, deemed it unsafe for him to continue, prioritizing the driver’s long-term health over participation in Sunday’s Grand Prix.
“Obviously, this is devastating,” Antonelli said from the paddock, speaking through visible bandages and a protective mask. “I felt something go wrong in the car mid-corner, and the impact was brutal. My nose took the full force – it’s broken in two places, and the pain is intense. But the team and doctors made the right call. Racing with this injury could risk worse complications.”
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff expressed disappointment but full support for the decision. “Kimi showed incredible pace all weekend, but safety comes first. He’s our future, and we won’t jeopardize that. George [Russell] will fly solo tomorrow, and we’ll fight for points.”
The incident adds to Antonelli’s challenging start to his rookie season, following a heavy crash in Australian GP practice that left him with a precautionary hand brace. Despite the setback, the Italian remains optimistic about recovery and returning stronger for the next round.
Fans and fellow drivers have flooded social media with messages of support, with many praising his maturity in accepting the withdrawal. The Chinese Grand Prix now loses one of its brightest stars, leaving Mercedes to defend their strong qualifying performance with just one car.
