Brendan Rodgers recently shed light on the status of Celtic midfielder Odin Thiago Holm, clarifying the reasons behind Holm’s limited appearances this season. The Norwegian player, signed in the summer of 2023, initially seemed poised for a regular spot in the squad. However, as the season progressed, Holm’s presence faded, with Daniel Kelly seemingly securing a stronger foothold in the starting lineup after the winter break.
Holm managed to appear briefly in three August matches, but with the arrival of Luke McCowan adding more competition for midfield roles, his opportunities became even more limited. Holm’s struggle to secure a spot in matchday selections intensified as he was ultimately left out of the Champions League roster. Despite a friendly match against Sligo Rovers offering a potential chance for Holm, he was notably absent from the game and, to fans’ surprise, also missing from the team’s official photo.
Addressing questions during a recent media conference, Rodgers explained Holm’s situation, specifically noting that injury had been a factor in the player’s reduced involvement. Rodgers shared that while most players are fit and available, Holm has been dealing with calf issues that have kept him sidelined for a while. The manager expressed satisfaction with the overall health of the squad, emphasizing that other players are in good form and ready to contribute as they enter a busy period of the season.
With key players like Callum McGregor, Adam Idah, and Nicolas Kuhn all fit and available for the upcoming match against Aberdeen, Rodgers highlighted the depth and quality these players bring to the squad. Given this bolstered lineup, Holm faces an even greater challenge in securing playing time. Barring unforeseen injuries, it appears difficult for Holm to break back into the rotation.
Looking ahead, a loan or even a permanent transfer in the January window may be on the cards for Holm, as these options could offer him a better chance to gain regular playing time elsewhere.
