Key Highlights from Team USA’s Victory and Caitlin Clark’s Debut
United States women’s national basketball team delivered an emphatic performance in the FIBA Women’s World Cup qualifying tournament, overpowering Senegal women’s national basketball team with a convincing 110–46 victory. The matchup was especially significant because it introduced several new faces to the senior national roster. Among the newcomers making their debut were Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, and Angel Reese. Their arrival added fresh energy to a squad that also featured experienced players such as Kelsey Plum, Chelsea Gray, and Jackie Young.

The contest took place in Puerto Rico, where Team USA is competing in qualification games ahead of the upcoming FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup scheduled to be held in Germany later this year. Head coach Kara Lawson is using these games as an opportunity to test different player combinations while building cohesion within the squad. With a mix of young talent and seasoned veterans, the coaching staff is focused on strengthening the team’s chemistry and preparing for the challenges that lie ahead in the international tournament.
Team USA’s Depth and Strategy
Lawson made it clear that her starting lineup will likely continue to change as the tournament progresses. In the game against Senegal, a veteran-heavy group took the floor first, including Olympic champions Gray, Kahleah Copper, and Young. Meanwhile, Plum did not begin the game in the starting lineup. The team also had to adjust due to the absence of Aliyah Boston, who was unavailable because of injury. However, the bench unit played a major role in maintaining momentum, with Clark, Rhyne Howard, Plum, Kiki Iriafen, and Monique Billings contributing valuable offensive production. Lawson later emphasized how crucial depth can be, noting that it is one thing to have a deep roster and another to effectively use it during games.
Debut Performances
Several players made memorable first appearances for the national team. Clark delivered one of the standout performances of the night, finishing with 17 points and 12 assists in just 19 minutes of play. Billings also impressed with 10 points and five rebounds, while Reese recorded six points and eight rebounds. Bueckers added nine points and four rebounds during her time on the court. Another player, Rae Burrell, entered the game later and gained valuable minutes. Clark later reflected on the moment, expressing appreciation for the opportunity to represent her country and acknowledging how special it feels to wear the national team jersey.
Building Chemistry Among Players
Developing strong team chemistry can be challenging when athletes come together from different professional teams. However, there was already some familiarity within the roster, as 11 of the 12 players had recently competed in the Unrivaled 3-on-3 basketball league during the offseason. Lawson pointed out that this shared experience helped players connect more quickly on the court. The team’s coordination was evident in their ball movement, with 28 of their 34 made field goals coming from assists. Despite committing 13 turnovers, the overall performance demonstrated promising teamwork as the group continues to grow together ahead of future qualifying games
